Fishing

The Mozambique coastline offers some of the most spectacular sport fishing in the world. The Indian Ocean, unspoiled and largely unexplored, is ideal for exciting fishing holidays.

With the strong North to South Mozambican current, it harbours some of the worlds most exciting Game and Bill fish. Species such as Black, Blue and Striped Marlin, Sailfish, short-bill Spearfish, Wahoo, Dorado, various Tuna species, King and Queen Mackerel, Kingfish, Barracuda and Snappers are all found here. Both recreational and specialist fishermen are increasingly attracted to Joao Belo Fishing and Camping to try their hand at luring these legendary species that have made this region so famous.

The best months for Black Marlin are between October and the end of January. Blue and Striped Marlin are found from September to January, while the main Sailfish season runs from the beginning of June until the end of September. From December to February anglers may see one of the most interesting creatures, the Whale Shark, the largest fish in the world, which can reach lengths of up to 14 meters and weigh up to 15 tons. Our river fishing offers grunter and kabeljou to name a couple.

Once you have your fishing license, you can fish anywhere.

Management will gladly help you to purchase your fishing license.

Please have your fishing license (for each person on the boat) as well as your boat license available for inspection by Maritime Police at all times.

Bait is available on request from management.

There is a ramp available to launch your boat. Our staff members will happily help you to launch.

When cruising on the river, please look out for local fishing boats. Please slow down and be sure to look out for nets running across the river (easily recognizable by buoys/floats).

Beach picnic sites are only accessible by boat.

WHALE WATCHING

Get up close to some of nature’s most majestic sea creatures between the months of June and December. Southern Right whales, Humpback whales and sometimes Minke whales make an appearance in the Mozambique Channel and feed on krill and copepods. Other whale species that can be seen are the Short-finned Pilot whale, the False Killer whale and the Dense Beaked whale.

Apart from the whales, dolphins, several species of turtles, schools of Tuna and sharks may also be spotted on the whale watching tour.

TURTLE WATCHING

Witness nature at its best when various species of turtles visit our beaches, and if you have good luck and timing, you might also see new born turtles.

Turtles have been protected in Mozambique for more than 40 years.

Nesting usually takes place in the last few months of the year continuing into the following year.
